An Re-write idea in Week 5

Hi Everyone

I have decided that I am going to write a new husband, a new true lover for poor Bertha. I will give the justice back to her.

Yeah, keeping the justice in an unjustified world may be a good idea to do any re-write.

Good Lucks

Hi everyone.
I changed my mind about my re-write of Wide Sargasso Sea. I'm trying to re-write an Iranian story which is written in persian languge and by a Persian author. The story is about a family which had to leave their country and go overseas for saving their life. The fate of Marym (heroine) is similar to Antoinette's situation in Sargasso Sea. Maryam as Antoinette faces a lot of unluky days in life. Both of them struggel a lot in their lives and moreover, their mother were in depress situtions. Maryam had to live her country due to neocolonialism. It is a bit difficult for me, because I have to do two tasks together, re-write and translation. Thus, I am trying to do my best.

Finally made a decision.

As I said before I am going to re-write about a Korean historical person.
I finally decided who I am going to write about.
I am going to write about 'Ko Jong' who was the last king of Korea. The background will be between just before Japan invaded Korea and after. While he was the king of Korea, people often said that he was not a good king, and after Japan invaded Korea, they wanted make Korean blame their king for loosing country. That is why many people still think he didn't have a ability to protect the contury.
But other people think that he was not as bad as people nomally think.

I want to re-write about him with his point of view.

My Re-write

MASH TV series
MASH series is categorised as situation comedy and is about a team of doctors and support staff stationed at the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH) in South Korea during the Korean War in 1950-1953 (wikipedia). I think the series only shows American view point. Koreans do not appear often at the series but when they do, they look very awkward without much to say. I’d like to write what Koreans, who were the people living there, have to say about the 4077th MASH.

Why the movie fails the text

So, I thought about mentioning this yesterday, but I don't have any backing. It's more of a gut feeling I got when I watched the movie. I don't think that the movie WSS stays true to the text. Not in the sense that the movie had to cut sections of the book, but that the strong sense of feminism is lacking. In the book, and you may disagree with me here, I felt the critical rewrite had a strong focus on the strength of Antoinette. In fact, her independence and departure from the English norm (subservience) was I felt what drove Rochester to the lengths he went to. In the book it seems more her decision to relent and marry him, whereas the movie makes it more of her succumbing to his pleas. I feel like the movie also strays from the story of Rochester making poor decisions and driving Antoinette mad. It seems to me like the movie makes all kinds of excuses for him, so that it seems like she is overreacting. Not too sure about any of this, it's just my opinion, but to me, the movie was a step backward, moving more toward Jane Eyre's side of the story than The Wide Sargasso Sea's.

New Idea

I put up some ideas earlier, but they were a bit murky and unformed. Mostly because they didn't exactly fit my criteria for what I was looking for. However, I think I've found something. I don't know how many of you have read the book Frankenstein, (formerly titled The Modern Day Prometheus), but it is quite the sad, compelling tale. I was always a little unhappy with how everything happened in the book, particularly from the side of the monster. So I want to rewrite the monster's life, to turn it from a story of vengeance into something where the Monster can grow manhood and perhaps contribute to society. Just a thought, anyway.

Idea for re-writing

For the rewriting I'm going to use the story "Oliver Twist" by Charles Dickens.
The time will be around 1950's and the setting will be Korea.
Oliver in my story will be called 'Mark' who is a mixed blood boy born in Korea. His dad was American soldier, a black guy, who came to Korea for Korean War and he met Mark's mum who is Korean from a rich family.

I'm going to tell a story about Mark's life as a mixed blood boy in Korea, like how he was mistreated and discriminated only because of different skin colour, different looks and his background. Also, there will be a girl called 'Young' who belong to very rich family of Korea for many generations and of course there will be something going on between Mark and Young ^^;;

That's my idea up to now- I hope I will develop better ideas or stories later on-
I'll keep updating my story ^^*

Reflection on the Movie

Hey Guys,

Im finally going to add my own thoughts on what I thought about the movie. I definitely enjoyed the movie, and my personal opinion is that i thought the ending of the story was reasonably fair. And I don't mean what Antoinette went through was fair, but an ending like that occurring in Britain would be considered quite unfortunate. I'm glad Antoinette burnt the house, haha. So I was fairly satisfied with that.

One of the things I couldn't understand was how Antoinette had shown her feelings when she found out about Rochester and the maid. I was expecting her the to be more harsh towards Rochester, and that's what i found unfair. If it was me i wouldn't be able to be around Rochester or even look at him. But I guess, that's what that makes Antoinette a strong character to be able to deal with so pain at once.

I'm still keeping my options open for my re-write. However I've also been thinking that I might want to re-write the part where Antoinette finds out about Rochester and the maid and maybe fill in more anger to show Rochester what he did was wrong, leading to why he decides to take her to Britain, because of her anger and behavior towards Rochester.

I'm still thinking about this idea, it would require me to thoroughly research the character Antoinette and re- write a more descriptive diary of what exactly she was going through at that time. I also thought there was something fishy going on with Christophine, I felt that she could have gone out of her way to help Antoinette stay back in Jamaica, but the situation just seemed like nothing could be done. I also might want to change the character of Christophine, because I couldn't seem to understand the character Christophine clearly, sometimes I saw her as Antoinette's
Angel but then why did a wise lady like Christophine give Antoinette the obeah?

Great Movie!! :D

Idea Sharing

Guys, hey Guys

Re-write needs lots of ideas. We all choose different story base, as far as i can see.

So, I would like to share few ideas about my re-write. Its not about materials like storyline or plot. Its about some general things I think it may be a good idea to keep in mind while planning our own 'masterpiece'.

I suggest that we closely follow the main theme of the original, I rekon this is pretty important.
Re-write is not a fanfic, I dont think we could be too creative.

I suggest that we do not change the main structre too much and we'd better not to go too far from the original. According to my own experiences, the farther you go the harder you end your story.

I suggest that keeping reading the original story and make changes where you think you want to re-write.

Just few random thoughts, if they sound bit silly, please do not mind :)

Good Luck

Jason

Good Morning Everyone =]

Good Morning all!

I was reading my post from last week and I realised in my intro I was going to introduce what I was going to re-write, but I forgot to mention it after my reflection on the W.S.S Film.

Anyways,

I was going to re-write a Tongan short story written in Tonga (sorry, I can't remember the date) by a Tongan author (I can't remember the author either). To me it sounds interesting to how the names of the Royal Family came about and how the first lady came into the Royal Family. I do not want to ruin the story by raving on about it here on the blog, all I can say is that there are some weird names that will probably make you giggle a little to yourself when I translate it into English. Funny as it may sound, but we still use these names up until today... especially in the Royal Family.

What do you think? Any changes I should make or any ideas you think that I may want to add into the re-write? SHARING IS CARING ! (hehehe...)

Better late than never...

Hi All,

I finally got myself sorted with this New Lit paper & now I'm part of this blog community, YAY!

After watching the Wide Sargasso Sea film last week, I was so anxious to finish reading the book & there's one interesting point in the book which surprised me a little; I'm not sure if any of you had noticed it or was I just reading too much in between the lines?

I was stunned to find out that Christophine was drugging Antoinette to calm her down when things turned sour with her husband, Rochester!!! All along, I perceived that Christophine was a righteous woman and she was put into jail for all the wrong reasons, but now I’m not too sure after this horrifying discovery!

Part Two in the novel where Rochester confronted Christophine:

‘You haven’t yet told me exactly what you did with my – with Antoinette.’ (Rochester)

‘Yes I tell you. I make her sleep.’ (Christophine)

In my opinion, this statement from Christophine was the first hint that she was giving Antoinette some kind of hallucinative potion or drug and she knew that it was fairly powerful too as she continues saying:

‘I succeed. But I get frightened that she sleep too much, too long. She is not beke like you, but she is beke, and not like us either. There are mornings when she can’t wake, or when she wake it’s as if she still sleeping. I don’t want to give her any more of – of what I give. So,’ she went on after another pause, ‘I let her have Rum instead. I know that won’t hurt her. Not much. As soon as she has the rum she start raving that she must go back to you and I can’t quiet her…’

So what was Christophine feeding Antoinette? And clearly it was very strong and she knew it too for she wouldn’t “want to give her any more” but she started giving her rum instead! Another crazy idea in my head, did Christophine give Antoinette’s mother the same potion or drug when she was married to Mr Mason and before the fire? Who would know? Or to give Christophine the benefit of the doubts, she was simply trying to help Antoinette and/or her mother to mend their marriages but the more she helps the more destruction she creates!!!

What an unexpected IRONY!!!

After all, I still feel that Christophine had all the good intentions to help poor Antoinette but the end result was so tragic that she merely had to walk away from the whole situation and let fate play its cold & heartless tricks on Antoinette…

Idea 4 a Rewrite

Hi bloggers!

Having read Jane Eyre, I found out that, at the end of the story, she didn't marry Rochester due to her different perspectives about him.

Therefore, I am thinking of re-writing that story again by bringing Jane Eyre to Samoa and let her marry me, as Samoa is another Pacific island which was colonised by The British..

If she doesn'n want to marry me, I will bring over Rochester to Samoa as he is paralysed, and massage him using the old traditional Samoan medicines.

I'm sure Jane will be very pleased if Rhochester is getting back his full strength again.

In my re-write, I will make myself as the narrator

How's that my mates? If you don't agree, I'll post another opinion!

New idea for re-write

Hi guy!
I have a new idea for re-write. I was going to re write the film ' life is beauty' or 'memories of geisha but i have changed my mind after Monday class.
Mike told us that we can re write with a historical person, right?
I want to use a Korean historical person who was trying hard to make korea independant during Japanese colonial period.
I haven't decided which person I am going to write because there are so many.
But I am glad that I can wirte a story with person who I like and i think it's going to be easier if i write about a person who was in colonial period.

About film and novel Wide sargasso sea

Hi guys,

Don't know what's your feelings about the film Wide sagasso sea, I felt so sad after watching it. As saja few days ago pointed out, I think Antonitte shouldn't deserve that ending. She has no fault at all. In the film, Rochester and Antonitte were thirsty to each other, they had happy time, I 'd rather believe Rochester did love Antonitte at one time, and then the situation made him changed. Also I 'd like to let Antonitte to forgive and accept Rochester after he had sex with Amele when he was unconscious. So at least at this stage, Antonitte could feel real happiness. Maybe I can ascribe her madness to the following event, but haven't got any ideas about what kind of event.

Besides, I am so confused about why Antonitte's brother eager to marry her and pay mony and estate to her husband? He could not get any profit from their marriage. And I think even they had an arranged marriage, still both of them could refuse it, they themself made the decision.

What do you guys think about that?

Ohayooo Gozaimasu ...

Hello Everyone,

My name is Ane (pronounced as Annie). I just wanted to make an intro to this blog and to let you know what I am about to re-write on and to comment on the film The Wide Sargasso Sea that we watched on Wednesday afternoon.

Im really excited about this re-write because we get to tamper with the story - and tamper is my middle name. HAHAH! It is not everyday that we get to tamper with stories which does not belong to us.

The film The Wide Sargasso Sea was, to me, a dramatic film filled with emotions that changed with every scene. Even though there was only a few of us and some of us despised it and others enjoyed it, I felt that the character Antoinette was not as good as I thought it would be. Like I told Mike and the few that left the class last, I felt Antoinette held back on revealing the character that we had expected her to be. But then again, we would also expect that as well, with the stories that the other characters spread amongst themselves, Antoinette tried her hardest not to match up to the rumours spread.

All in all, I was one of the few that enjoyed the film. All I need to do now is finish the novel and make some more comparisons.

For now...

JA MATAA !

Jane Eyre Re-Write

Hey guys,

Like some of you, I was having a hard time deciding what to do my re-write on... After scrolling through everyone elses ideas I noticed most of you want to do something other than Wide Sargasso Sea and Jane Eyre. So I decided that I would be boring and re-write Jane Eyre. I want to change the ending of the story, so that Jane does end up travelling to India with St. John, to accompany him as a missionary. I havent quite yet decided whether I want to introduce a new character - who would play the role of Janes new lover, instead of Rochester - or make it so she falls in love with St. John, or just keep Jane single...

Any advice on what you guys think I should do would be awsome!

Goodluck with your stories!!!!!

=)

Wide Sargasso Sea (the Movie)

Hey Guys

Just thought i'll share abit of what i learned from today class...Im sure most of you have already finish reading 'Jean Rhys-Wide Sargasso sea'where as for me im on page 74.
I NEVER thought i'll enjoy reading this book but i did. I pretty much hate Rachester... not too sure about Antoinette she's still a question mark to me right now. Christophine who i admire her for her feminist role, and Amielie who i find very cunning whom i very much dispise. Im not hating just saying how it is. ahahahahaha

I'm still planning too

Hi I am trying to find a good story to start writing re-write, rather than WSS. I want to find somthing that has already colonialism idea in the story, but it is quite hard to find one. I just scanned what I've read and watched so far, and two stories were come out in my mind, which are 'The great expectation, Life is beauty and Memoirs of a Geisha

But I haven't decided yet what I am going to choose to write. As soon as I have a clear idea, I will write in blog again.

Thanks and good luck everyone !!

Still Planning

Greetings to all, im Jason

First of all, I have not decided what I am going to do yet and I will keep thinking.

As suggested that I could re-write something from my own Chinese heritage.
But, I do not know chinese literature deep enough to find a good base. And
translation is another obstacle coz I find it is hard to translate the beauty, strength, and heritage of Chinese literature into equivalently sophsticated English Language.

So, at the time of now, I may just re-write the 'WSS'.

Good luck to you all

Jason Wang

hey everyone

my name is adnan to those of you who dont me yet, for the story re-write im actually planning to adopt a new idea.. while many of you are looking at rewriting new stories/movies, i personally thought I can do something slightly different, so i started looking at classic stories where endings are often boring and very predictable. then i started reaching out for advice, and i remembered how my dad always tells to not make judgements before you listen to the story from both sides, and thats when the idea just came to me, my first attempt at a story re-write will be "the little red riding hood" from the wolf's point of view .. am also going to try and give colonial features to the story but on a human/animal scale. all ideas are welcome
