Warg's Tail

So, been thinking about the re-write.

I've had a few ideas, but one that came upon me today while vacuuming went a little like this:
In Middle-Earth, there is a creature known as a Warg. Wargs are the result of centuries of inbreeding, crossbreeding and the perversion of an otherwise perfectly good wild canine formerly known as Canis Lupus.

Wargs are more along the lines of Canis Horrificus. They have huge, bear-like jaws, prehensile necks and beady eyes set back on their heads. They measure up to five feet tall at the heavily muscled shoulder, ten feet long from snout to tail and are covered in short, dense hair. They are vicious and cunning and have no qualms when it comes to eating humans (or elves or dwarves, or hobbits, who are particularly bite-sized).

They've been like this for years upon years, and an unholy alliance between them and goblins has kept them this way - and in all probability their genetic warping will keep them going this way. Of course, you and I have a better understanding of genetics, so this next part probably won't come as such a shock. It came as a shock to the Wargs though.

Perhaps ten years before the One Ring came into the possession of one Frodo Baggins and that whole debacle sparked off, a litter of Wargs was whelped within the shadow of the Misty Mountains. Six were large, robust creatures with coal-dark pelts, sturdy little legs and needle-sharp milk teeth. Whelps.

The seventh was not. He was a buddle of dark fluff barely the size of terrier, forever falling over or being sat on by his siblings and couldn't wrestle to save himself. He was a runt, a throwback, a...a puppy.

He was not a Warg, but a wolf.

It was a miracle he lived beyond his first hour. But he did, and was named Ralph (which, funnily enough, means 'wolf council' in modern man-speech, though Ralph was not to know this). His mother kept him mostly for the sake of comic relief, and because it meant she had more whelps than the bitch in the next run, who only had six. Ralph turned out to be a constant disappointment, however; he did not like to fight, only to run and chase rabbits, and seemed to have no interest in the taste of man-flesh, or dwarf-flesh, or any other kind of two-legger flesh.

Then, when Ralph was five, the pack were moved to Isengard - Saruman the White's strong hold - to become fighters for the wizard's growing forces. After a year in the fighting-ring (the pits where Wargs are trained for combat) he had had enough.

Ralph fled into Fangorn Forest...and by some miracle was not eaten by the angry trees there (and it really is a miracle, because those huorn? They are one cranky bunch of branchs.)

In any case, he lived, and met the oddest bunch of creatures you could hope for...

(Any thoughts?)

idea for rewrite

Hi,
I'm going to do a rewrite on 'Cry, the beloved country' by the South African author Alan Paton.
In the book, the white man Arthur Jarvis was killed by the native Absalom Kumalo. After the arrest and the trial, Jarvis's father and Kumalo's father have an emotional connection but the rewrite will be about much later and told by Jarvis's son, whose father was killed, and Kumalo's son, who was unborn at the time of his father's execution. Since the original book was published, there's been Apartheid and Mandela's release and soccer World Cup so there will be separate stories told by each son at different timeline. sound okay?

musings...

The Wizard of OZ

The Witches are the Shaman of Oz and have been addressing the exploitation of the resources of their world that have taken place under the old Witch of the North. They wish to live in concorde with the cycles of life in their world. They have had a realisation that the Strawman is no longer a necessicity as the birds are no given bird baths and feeding stations so that they do not mess with the fields during sowing. The Mechanical Woodman has been put out as local harvesting takes place by locals and therefore mechanisied felling of trees is unnecessary and the Lion was the mass entertainment and means of building prowess and emotion in the communicty in the old ways showing domination over the beasts and nature... is really just taggin along as he is just subjegated and really wants to go with the Witches of east and west but is following along cos he feels powerless.
So the Witches of East and West are helping the munchkins change to organic permacultural farming practices and while there are some that are catching on and enjoying a better balance in life the Old Witch of the North keeps agitating for a return to the old ways which gave her all the influence. As fate would have it the Witch of the East was attending a forum in a hotly contested area of Oz and was just leaving as the witch of the north had just arrived and was stirring up violence amongst the munchkins and the WWE felt it better to depart than stay and allow the agitation to become dangerous. As she mounted her broomstick down comes dorothy's house on top of WWE. Queue normal story but now it is the OWNorth spinning the truth to enlist Dorothy in their venture.
The OWNorth sends them down The Yellow Brick Road which is the old, winding non-direct road, via the old dilapidated agricultural, industrial and entertainment sectors which is of course going to result in Dorothy finding the Strawman, Tin Woodmand and the Lion, and Dorothy being caring, and a little naive, buy's their tales of wow and resolves to help them. Thinking that the language of the three should match that of the industrial propaganda complex and Bourgeoisie ideas of free and leisure time and worktime, efficiency, economies of scale, capitalism.
The OWNorth then sets up the meeting with the 'Wizard' (Who is this guy???) and...
Before the show down between Dorothy and the WWW the WWW tries to talk reason with Dorothy but the OWNorth has seeded so well the idea that WWW is the enemy (and is charming Dorothy) that the WWW finds it very difficult to get through to her. The Lion does finally gather up his courage when he realises that they were empty gifts and promises that the 'Wizard' gave him and that the OWNorth is actually the one causing the problems and kills the OWNorth breaking the charm and Dorothy then sees that the WWW isn't so bad and the ideas while novel are certainly not evil.
The WWW tells Dorothy that she has had the power all along to go home using the shoes that she got from her sisters dead body, only the OWNorth had withheld this information in the hope of using her for her ends.
I think it'll flesh out alright. Whadya reckon?

My idea for the re write.

For my re write I plan to take the tale of Maui fishing up the north island. Once Maui has fished up the North island a new character will be introduced to the story in the form of an English sea captain and his crew. The events after this will loosely follow the history of Aotearoa to the point where it becomes known also as New Zealand or Ourtearoa.

The Hunt for the Wide Sargasso Sea

Hi everyone!

Just thought I'd throw out some advice for all those still looking for a copy of Wide Sargasso Sea.

Secondhand Book Shops.

I (or rather my intrepid mum) was able to find a copy at a second hand book stall for $3 this morning. The big bookshops might have sold out, but hit up the smaller ones or the pre-loved stockists. Or weekend markets, if you have any local ones.

Best of luck anyway,
Aimee
