My idea for the re write.
For my re write I plan to take the tale of Maui fishing up the north island. Once Maui has fished up the North island a new character will be introduced to the story in the form of an English sea captain and his crew. The events after this will loosely follow the history of Aotearoa to the point where it becomes known also as New Zealand or Ourtearoa.

Sounds interesting - so the colonisation takes places earlier than in 'real life'? Or will you change our story to end up with a different current version of "Ourtearoa"?
The colonisation will take place shortly after the north island is fished up as the sea captain will see the new land that has just been fished up. It will end up with NewZealand still being exactly the same. (I think anyway, you never know how the story is going to develop)
