Hi everyone i have decided to do my re-write on the famous childrens book, Charlie and the Chocolate factory by Roald Dahl. I have decided to use the original text as my base. Due to criticism Dahl rewrote portions of the 1964 edition and republished in 1972.
I will be focusing on the Oompa Loompas and in particular my own creation a Oompa Loompa called doodle. The issuses that i will address are the increasing consumption culture, power struggles and the wider groups disgust with Skeebo (the only Oomba Loompa named in Dahls book) and his need to 'suck up' to Willy Wonka.
I was thinking that a way to introduce the story would be the effects that the new diet of nothing but lollies and chocolate is having on them ie. rotton teeth. In the dentist office.

Hi Rachel
I'm looking forward to reading your completed work. It sounds a fascinating storyline to tackle. I don't know the original Dahl book about Charlie and Willy Wonka but I have seen the movie. I am really interested to know what the issues were that prompted his need to rewrite portions of it. I imagine they may be due to criticism about race/colour depictions? Please let us know when you get a chance. Good luck.
Hi Rachel
I’m very curious about the book you’ve chosen.
As you said last week, Roald Dahl is one of the most famous authors of children’s book.
Yet, I haven’t read such a good book so far$#%?!#
However, I was very impressed your point: ‘consumption culture’
You are book lover and love literature which means you’ll enjoy your journey of rewriting. I believe that your rewriting will be fantastic.
Thank you Rachel
You always try to encourage me to do well
I really appreciate that and I hope you’ll give me advice sometimes because, my English proficiency is not good enough to describe something particularly the physical description which might be easier for you.
Hi Rachel, to be honest "Charlie and the Chocolate factory" is one of my favourite children book. I've read and have seen the movie and the funny thing is I have a friend who looks like Willy Wonka.
I think your idea is great and the main idea of this story is about lollies and chocolate. I'm looking forward to read your re-write. You will be a great writer, I'm so sure.
Hi~ Such a great plan for your re-writing and also you've already got few good comments on it. Well~ I agree with others. your plan sounds GREAT~ and 'Realistic! consumption culture, power struggles, new diet of lollies and chocolate etc. Well I haven't seen the whole movie.. (also haven't read the book!) but when I saw the last part of the movie, I was very impressed with that little boy chose to stay with his family when he was given 'a chance to be a RICH(?)'by John Depp. And also for the scene when John Depp was having a meal with that little boy's family and there was some kind of 'familyhood' I guess.
Well, anyway enough talk for me... Good luck with it!
Hi Rachel,
You had made an interesting choice but I am very glad you choose that as when I was younger I loved Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, I used to watch the movie all the time (the old one) and I also have read the book many times. I loved looking at all the lollies made by Willy Wonka, they all looked so yum haha.
I think the issues you are going to talk about in your re-write are all worthy and problems that we deal with in everyday life and wriitng from an Oompa Lompas view will be cool to read.
Goodluck, cant wait to read it
